Question: I have a major vein on either leg that has just recently become visible. In my twenties, these veins were visible for a while, then they disappeared (strangely enough as I scaled back on my exercise regime - I used to run marathons but gave it up after I got married). The veins seem perfectly normal, no blotching, swelling or anything like that, and no real associated itch or pains. I do get mild leg pains sometimes after exercise and very occasionally cramps, but nothing very serious, and up till now I've associated them with normal muscle wear and tear of my training regime (I went back into marathon training 2 years ago, and average 40-50 miles a week plus about 6 hours a week weight training). My question is are visible veins always varicose (or some other problem), or can they be 'benign'? They seem to become more prominent when I stand or exercise vigourously, and fade away when I sit or lie down. Is it possible they're just displaced and made visible because my leg muscles have bulked up a lot, or are they de facto a medical problem I should get checked out? Varicose veins run on both sides of my family. I don't smoke, am not overweight.
Answer: -I was also wondering about the veins in my legs. My job requires a lot of walking and standing. Since I started this job a couple years ago, the veins have been more visible. It concerns me. Maybe I should find a new job? -Visible veins are not always vericose, but varicose veins are always visible. If you are having symptoms (aching, clots etc) get some support stockings first. If these are of no benefit, then, consult a vascular surgeon about correct diagnosis, and if truly a problem (s)he whould be able to come up with a therapy.
