Question: Has anyone ever experienced being pregnant and giving birth as a big person. I am looking to pregnancy with a lot of extra pounds which the doctors say shouldn't be a significant problem. Any advice, information you could pass along to me. I am starting my first cycle of clomid hoping to get pregnant.
Answer: -Just thought I would pass along a little of my experience. When my daughter was conceived, I was 37 years old, weighed aboyt 268, and had no problems with my pregnancy. My dr was wonderful, and never gave me a hard time about my weight. I had absolutely NO COMPLICATIONS at all, and certainly no concerns due to weight. My blood pressure was great, I gained very little, had all the tests you could possibly have, inculding amniocentisis,,,no problems. When my daughter was born, I had to have C-section. She weighed 12lbs., which was a big surprise to the Dr. He kept telling me 8 lbs at the most. I healed quickly and well. Everyone was astounded that I did not have gestational diabetes. If you need anything else, let me know. I took clomid to conceive my son (my first), and it does work well, and fast. Got pregnant the 2nd month. The little miss, well, I thought I had the flu. Never occurred to me that I might be pregnangt until I was almost 3 months along.. -I've been super-sized for most of my adult life. About four months before conceiving, I started a balanced reduced-calorie diet and a low-impact aerobics program, in an attempt to get into better physical condition for pregnancy. (As a programmer/analyst, I was too sedentary.) I lost a considerable amount of weight but was still high-mid-sized when the twins were conceived -- but was in much improved physical condition because of the exercise. During the first half of the first trimester, with my obstetrician's approval, I stayed on a reduced-calorie, high nutrient balanced diet and lost about 10 more pounds. After that, I got the "no more dieting!" order and ate a healthy balanced diet with no caloric restrictions. I felt strong, wonderful, in perfect balance, with all "excess" nutrients going to the developing babies. Never felt better in my life! Needless to say, I took no prescription or over-the-counter drugs during pregnancy, drank no alcohol, and did not smoke (never did). I gained about 25 pounds between conception and delivery. I had NO problems with hyperglycemia or high blood pressure. I kept doing low-impact aerobics through the first trimester, then was told to stop when the twins were "discovered" by ultrasound -- but I kept on walking as much as possible. I also worked full time until about 4 weeks before my due-date. I did develop varicose veins during the second half of my last trimester: fairly common with twins. Also stretch-marks. The only other significant problem I had was extreme sleepiness during the last 6 weeks: probably not enough blood flow for two placentas and my brain, so my brain got shortchanged!
