Question: Due to varicose veins I bought surgical stockings, but someone told me that diabetics should not wear them. Is this true?
Answer: -After my heart bypass I was given 2 pairs in the hospital and told to wear them. After having both legs cut open from knee to ankle that was the last thing I wanted to do and did not use them. -I wear a very heavy, prescription strength knee-high compression stocking on my left leg due to Charcot. If not put on properly, this much compression it can be very dangerous. When it is on properly, it is amazing what it can do. You should talk to your doctor about the use of the stockings and the appropriate compression for you. Be sure you understand the proper way to put them on and how to wash them. It may sound silly, but you can ruin the stocking very easily by washing them with the wrong soap or by putting them on incorrectly. -Reach for the salt shaker whenever someone anonymous tells you diabetics shouldn't do something. I also have varicose veins and wear support thingys. The severe pain has subsided and I only wear them when I expect to be on my feet for extended periods. Even forgot them a couple times without adverse effect. Of course, tell the doctor, if for nothing more that keeping the medic informed of what's going on.
