Question: A friend has a recurring problem with a leg ulcer. Does anyone here have experience with the use of comfrey root to treat such? Other treatments include exercise (walking and biking), bedrest, and CA, MG and ZN supplements. Also propolis tincture at times, which seems to dry the wound up but not so far to promote healing either... Also, is there any conventional medical treatment other than surgery?
Answer: -My father-in-law suffered from a varicose leg ulcer for 14 years, which responded to none of dozens of different treatments, some surgical. In the end it healed over completely a month after taking 2000IU of vit E daily. The improvement started almost immediately. -There is a relatively new conventional method that is being used with excellent results but there are few of these clinics around. What they do is make a solution from the platelets, growth factors, and healing factors in your bloodstream and apply it directly to the ulcer. Ulcers that have not healed by older methods (often 6 months to two years old or more) will completely disappear in 4-6 weeks of treatment. As I understand it, the solution needs to be applied to fresh tissue so some debridement (trimming of dead tissue) is done before applying this solution. -I have seen excellent results using hyperbaric oxygen. In New Zealand this is not a conventional medical treatment but medics in Auckland do refer patients to the one specialist practitioner. He brought the treatment back with him from the US so I presume it must be more readily available in your part of the world.
